American Roulette

The gun goes off
in about two weeks
We can’t guess why? where?
or who?
It
could
be
you
There will be blood
terror screams sirens weeping
makeshift shrines, funerals
the shooter will be alive
or dead
Media will report
nonstopnonstop non
s-t-o-p!
for a while
and then?

we will
go back to the beginning and
this
all
over
over
again again

  1. This thin poem uses a lot of lines and few words to make a trivial point. The perspective is entirely personal, lacking the societal and political dimensions of the problem of gun violence. Nothing is accomplished here.

    • It is usually the nature, I think, of a poem to be personal. If you want societal and political analysis, that’s more properly done by an essay or article. And, also on the personal level, I can say: it speaks to me!
